Reading energy, water and gas meters

Pulse-output meters can be connected straight to FiOC-40 and FiO-40 without an extra module. How to wire them and what to watch for.

Many energy, water and gas meters give a pulse (a contact closing) for every unit consumed. The first four digital inputs (DI1–DI4) of FiOC-40 and FiO-40 can count these pulses, so consumption reaches the BMS without a separate meter-reading device.

Wiring

  • The meter’s pulse output goes between the input and the group’s common terminal. No external voltage is applied to the input.
  • Counting is available only on DI1–DI4.
  • Meters with electronic or reed outputs are preferable; mechanical contacts can bounce and overcount.

What you see

The device gives both the total pulse count and the count within a time window you choose (for example the last 15 minutes). The window value is for watching current consumption; the total is for billing and reports.

If the power goes off

The FiOC-40 does not lose the counter total when the power goes off; when power returns, counting continues from where it left off. On the FiO-40 the counter starts again from zero when the device restarts. For long-term records such as billing, we recommend also accumulating the value in the BMS.
