Connecting fan-coil thermostats to the BMS: FiOC-40 BACnet router

BACnet thermostats talking over RS-485 can reach the BMS on Ethernet without a separate router. This note describes the router feature of FiOC-40.

Many field devices such as fan-coil thermostats communicate with BACnet MS/TP over an RS-485 line, while the BMS usually sits on a BACnet/IP network over Ethernet. Joining the two normally takes a separate BACnet router.

With FiOC-40

If there is already a FiOC-40 in the panel, the thermostats are connected to its RS-485 line. With the router feature enabled, the FiOC-40 joins the two networks and the BMS sees the thermostats directly. Meanwhile the FiOC-40 keeps running its own control program.

Good to know

  • The router feature is an optional licence on top of the base licence.
  • The two networks must have different network numbers; the factory settings already differ.
  • The thermostat RS-485 line must be terminated correctly (EOL at both ends).
  • FiO-40 can do the same job with a Level 2 licence.
