Relay or FIO? Driving loads the right way

The device has two kinds of output: relays and flexible FIO outputs. This note briefly explains which one to use for a pump, valve or damper, and how.

Relay outputs (DO1–DO8)

These are real relay contacts for switching loads such as pumps, fans or contactor coils. The load is powered externally; the relay only opens and closes the circuit. For loads like contactor coils we recommend a suppression element to protect the contact. 230 V lines must be routed apart from signal cables and connected by authorised people.

FIO outputs (FIO1–FIO8)

As an analogue output, FIO drives a valve or damper actuator proportionally with 0–10 V or 2–10 V. This is the most common connection wherever proportional control is needed.

Note: FIO is not a relay

FIO can also be set as a digital output, but even then it is a small voltage output, not a contact. A contactor, valve or 230 V load must not be connected directly to FIO. For such loads a small interposing relay or SSR is placed in between and drives the load.
